Thousands of U.S. Farmers Call for USMCA Renewal

The Agriculture Coalition for USMCA released a letter, signed by 2,376 farmers from across the country, that was sent to President Trump today urging renewal of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement with targeted improvements.

“The USMCA is foundational to American food and agriculture’s success, providing expanded cross-border rail traffic, long-term policy certainty, and greater supply chain predictability for American producers – and this agreement delivers for American consumers, too,” the letter said.

The letter noted that exports to Mexico have increased by $10.7 billion and exports to Canada by $7.6 billion since the agreement was enacted in 2020. In fact, over a third of U.S. agriculture exports are destined for Mexico and Canada, creating important and reliable markets for ag products.

“North American trade has propped up more than half a million U.S. jobs in food and agriculture, and the agreement has generated more than $60 billion in U.S. agricultural exports to Canada and Mexico,” the letter noted. “American families have access to more affordable food options, which has helped our country weather unpredictable natural disasters and tragedy.

USMCA was signed by the United States, Mexico and Canada in 2018 during President Trump’s first term and was implemented in 2020 to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Under the agreement, leaders of all three nations must begin a formal review by July 1, 2026, to determine whether to renew the agreement. If renewed, USMCA would remain in effect for an additional 16 years, with another review scheduled in 2032. If the countries fail to reach an agreement and move to terminate, USMCA will expire in 2036. The review could also enter a period of annual consultations with no clear path forward, creating significant uncertainty for the farm economy.

With key deadlines quickly approaching, agricultural groups are advocating to uphold and strengthen the agreement.

Farmers across the nation have also been talking about the benefit of the agreement and encouraging the administration to begin the renewal process.
